So, the most bizarre and best night ever.
So, my friends and I with my dad left for the 4 hour drive to my first SSLYBY show. I was so excited! About two hours into it, I look down, and see that Phil is calling. He told me that there was a 99.9% chance that the show would be cancelled because John Robert woke up and had lost his voice, like entirely. He said he thought of us first, because he knew we were driving all that way. He then said he would call me right back. He called me back and said that they were all fighting about whether or not to do the show. Phil said that he volunteered to sing the entire show, but it was looking like he was losing the fight. He then said he would call me back again, and when he did, he said he had good news. The show was on, and Phil would sing the entire show. He said he told John Robert that we were driving all that way, and Phil said, "you guys saved the show". We were so excited, and so Phil told us to keep on driving. =)
Later, when we got to the show, there were 3 opening bands, including Ha Ha Tonka right before SSLYBY. We went up to Will and introduced ourselves, and we asked how they were going to do the show. He said they had been practicing all afternoon and they would do songs they didn't normally do. We bought some merchandise( including we picked up Meghan's booklet! SO COOL! ) And watched the first 2 opening bands, who I didn't really like. My friend spotted Phil, who was wearing a Reds cap, and we walked over, and we introduced ourselves. We talked about his eye, which was still a black eye, and he said his lip still hurt, b/c it had been busted. We then asked which songs they were doing with John Robert not being able to sing. He said they would do, "Yr Broom" which I got really excited about. We chatted some more, than got our places for Ha Ha Tonka. We were right up front, exactly in front of where Phil would be.
Ha Ha Tonka was amazing, and they invited the Boris guys to come up for their last song. Will was behind us, and walked up on stage, and so did Phil and John Robert. They played "12 inch 3 speed ocilating fan" and Will sang John Robert's part. SO GREAT.
Then the guys got set up for their set and it was amazing. Phil told Russian jokes, and said the entire Reds line-up for the game he went to with his dad. The set list was so random, but I recognized everything. Johnathan played drums the entire time, and John Robert played bass.
Set List (and not entirely in order, but what it said on the actual set list) :
Not Worth Fighting
Modern Mystery
Let's Get Tired
Yr Broom
Lower the Gas Prices, Howard Johnson
Dead Right
You Could Write a Book
Mr. Wendall
Oceanographer
During Mr. Wendall, Phil dropped the mic, jumped up on the amps right in front of us and started singing without a mic. It was so awesome. You could tell he was a little nervous running the whole show, but he did such a great job. John Robert said he wanted anything to be singing, but he couldn't.
Before Oceanographer, Phil said that that would be it, b/c they had to cut it short since John Robert couldn't sing. Then he said,"Unless anyone wants to come up and sing House Fire," and these guys next to me said that they could.
After Oceanographer, Phil and I looked at each other, and Phil gave us a shoutout, saying we had driven a long way. It was so great.
Then, Phil invited the guys to come up and sing House Fire, and they knew every lyric, and did a good job. The SSLYBY guys were impressed.
Then, Lennon?? of Ha Ha Tonka came out and said he would do Oregon Girl, so Phil got behind the drums and Lennon did a great great job.
After the show, I asked Phil for the setlist and he handed it to me. Then we met John Robert, and got him to sign my set list and get pictures. Then we did the same with Will and Johnathan, who were all super nice. Then we went back over to John Robert and my friends got their posters signed. We noticed something was up with him, and after a while, he said he was upset about losing his voice, and so he got drunk. We felt super bad, then he said he had to go help load up their stuff. Then we went over to Phil, who was talking with my dad, and got pictures with him and autographs. He is so nice, and he asked us if we knew the band, Wheat, who we did, and he got super excited about that. Then we were saying our goodbyes, and he shook my friends' hands, then reached for mine, and then said,"Wait, you deserve a hug." and gave me a hug. =)
I had such a great time, and it was such a good show for a fan, b/c I got to see a setlist that they have never ever done before. I was so lucky to get the meet the guys, and I can't wait to see them again. =)
Oh, and I will post videos on my youtube as the day goes on, and once I do I will post the link on here.
