i went to their show at the outland ballroom in springfield (a block away from pershing street!) right before they flew up to record the new album. after the show i got to talk to phil very briefly about the new record. he said the third album was going to be more straight up rock than anything previously attempted, and that the group was pretty divided on what makes a good rock song. he was still wrestling around with how he felt about it, but he told me that he wanted to stay true to the spirit of rock, but at the same time avoid certain rock song cliches.
p.s. this isn't HUGE news, but i asked them a few weeks ago about the album's name and they said it was top secret for now in case they change their minds.

divided on songwriting?
that is never a good thing to be when you are about to record an album. :\

Maybe not on songwriting, but perhaps delivery...speed, instruments used, effects pedals, etc? We've all heard three versions for lots of their songs: acoustic or demo version, album version, then live version. Pershing's album versions were purposefully more like the live versions than the acoustic versions. Though of course post-album-release the live versions got even faster, louder, and more rocking And Broom perhaps you could say the album versions were a bit closer to the acoustic/demo versions than the live versions. Of course there's the cliches like a rocking guitar solo in every song and all the lyrics being about either hooking up with a girl or rocking out.

yeah, let me clarify: they were more divided about the sound than songwriting. it didn't sound like a huge creative riff, just differing opinions.
yeah, and i'm not sure which cliches phil was referring to specifically, so it will be interesting to hear if he talks about that anymore in interviews as they get closer to the album release (in april?).

"Banned by the Man" was the first song they played at their Jan 31st show and John said it would be on their new album and that they were done recording.

Oh here I go monopolizing the thread. I read a VERY GOOD interview that YOU ALL NEED TO READ. It's basically all about the new album: skinnyankle.wordpress.com/2010/01/31/an-interview-with-someone-still-loves-you-boris-yeltsin/ Phil named a couple songs that won't be on the album, he explained what the sound of the album is like and who will like it, etc. He also talked about a really pretty song that Will wrote that they've been playing since they were 16, but that finally came together for this album (Chris Walla came in and pressed record one day when Phil and Will were playing around with it.)

All Hail Dracula is so tight. Phil said the recording came out real nice.
Also, I wonder what song Phil was talking about at the end of that interview. The old song.
I wish it would be Rachel Lara.

Floor Space: Dec 7 - no video that we know of. Ray said this was the title of a song at the show. Ray do you remember what this song sounded like? [/quote] i really don't remember if that was what the title was. it sounded like they said something about the title of a song and it called Floor Space, but i don't really remember. also, i think i recognize a part from Oh God I Saw That Lady's Hair in Animal Kind. listen from 40 second into "Animal Kind" and then listen from 40 seconds into Oh God I Saw That Lady's Hair. same song?

I'm so excited I finally got to record "Back in the Saddle." I really like this song! Oh, and Billions - the company that books their tour shows - lists their availability as "Spring 2010 Jun / Jul 2010" and lists "New album on Polyvinyl in May 2010". billions.com/avails I don't think that necessarily means that's for sure or anything, but who knows. (Mar 26, 2010: Billions now says a new album will be out in the fall.)

No idea. Chris Walla sounds like a real nice guy, so I'm sure the album will be great whatever.

Also, I wonder what song Phil was talking about at the end of that interview. The old song. I wish it would be Rachel Lara. Some fans on last.fm have a song in their playlists called, "The old song we never did anything with." I'm very curious about it Anyone have it or know what it is?
