Whoa so, the album is out way sooner than we expected. All you lucky guys who preordered it are giving your ears a treat for sure. Let's face it, the new album is pretty different from the previous two and it is still excitingly good. What better than to keep this excitement rolling?
Now you kids have a chance to listen to the album repeatedly and formulate your own questions and speculations about it and have Philip thingyey & Will Knauer enlighten you with any answers you desire! They have so humbly agreed to sit on a telephone with me for an interview about the new album, Let it Sway, next month.
The interview is totally fan generated, so email your questions to me at meghanbaier@gmail.com
Remember, this is an interview promoting the new album, so keep the questions Let it Sway-related unless you have this super awesome and unique general question you just HAVE to submit and I MAY reconsider.
Anyone who emails me the question "How did they get their band name?" will be automatically discarded.
So start analyzing and asking because the door is only open until August 8th!

The Beatles used to sometimes reference old songs in newer ones - borrowing a lyric or idea that connected songs. It's a real treat to hear older SSLYBY songs and demos find a new life in new studio recordings. From what I've heard, Chris Walla used to be a Tape Club subscriber, so he'd probably heard many of the songs (Weirdest Afternoon/Oh God I Saw That Lady's Hair, Master Plan, etc) that transitioned into Let It Sway songs. I want to ask Phil about how some of those older songs made that transition into new songs. Not quite sure how to word that, but I'll think about it some more and come up with something before August 8th.

Straight from Phil: "Yeah, I remembered that old line from not worth fighting and it worked perfectly with the in pairs progression, so we brought it back. We'll release the demo for it at some point, it's kind of funny."
Also, "Yeah, rachel lara is cool. We only lpayed it twice at a show and then we forgot about it. Walla really likes that one."

I keep thinking of all these obnoxious questions that have nothing to do with the album, plus all these even more obnoxious question that DO have to do. I'll try to tone down the obnoxiousness and put something up today or tomorrow.
---- Okay, here's what I have so far:
* Which is it the old song you mentioned awhile back that Chris Walla unexpectedly recorded when the two of you were playing piano and guitar early one morning at the studio?
* How did "Stuart" get its name?
* It sounds like Will got to make a lot of cool sounds with his guitar for "In Pairs" and other songs. Can you tell us about that, Will? Also, what were some of the pedals or little effects you guys used on various songs?
* How did you come up with the idea to use Lewis' acrostic from the end of Through The Looking Glass as part of lyrics for "Phantomwise"?
* I loved your incorportation of a few bits of older, Tape Club-era songs into some new songs on this album. What were some of your favorite musical or lyric bits that you got to recycle?
* Chris Walla was an old Tape Club subscriber, right? How did it help to have someone that knew both your present, as well as where you were coming from in the past?
* Every time you put out a new song or album I feel like I understand and appreciate all of your music better, and I'm continually impressed by how versatile you are as musicians. You seem to flow subtly from one genre to another, even within one song -as was often the case on many of the Let It Sway tracks. It makes for a very rich listening experience. Even though you've only released a couple hours' worth of music through Polyvinyl, you have a ton of other music and recordings. They may not have the recording quality of the Polyvinyl releases, but I think like your new songs they too enrich the overall experience of listening to your full body of work. Any plans to release some of these in the future as a B-sides compliation?

Mine so far:
The album sounds much different sonically than the last two. Was this a sound that you had in mind before going into the studio, or was it something that took shape during the recording process?
Along with the new sound, there seems to be a move away from piano/acoustic based songs like Travel Song, Gwyneth, HEERS, and Dead Right. Was this premeditated or did it just happen in the studio?
How did you like recording with Walla and Sorenson in the studio? Will there ever be a return to a "bedroom record"?
Will Kittens with Casts ever make it onto an album?
What role does Jonathon James have in the songwriting process?
What is the story behind All Hail Dracula? How did it get its title?
Where would the band be if Phil had killed John with that barstool?
I love you?

thanks guys! i appreciate the wealth of questions you've given, especially sarah lol. unfortunately the interview can't go on for an hour so I will be wittling out some, please don't be offended if a question isn't specifically asked. also, some people ask similar questions (obviously stuff that has to do with walla and sound variety) so i'm not going to tell phil and will which question came from whom. it takes up more time and may make someone else who asked the same question feel cheated or something. i don't know. thanks for understanding!

I think I have only 3 questions: 1. What made you guys decide to put the specific writing credits for this record? Does it mean the writing process has changed? 2. Also, I saw in the credits that Jonathan James actually contributes vocals. On which songs? 3. Bended is so beautiful. Why isn't it included in the actual record? Was it intended for the record, and then deemed out of place when deciding the final track list? Hi, Meghan! Thanks for doing this. I was wondering if this is going to be like a podcast or something recorded, i dunno, just curious.

i talked to phil about recording. i don't have anything fancy except an 80's tape recorder. he offered to record it into an mp3 for me, so we might be doing that instead (i hope) and then writing a transcript!

That's awesome Phil's going to record himself and Will. Meghan, you can do the same using a headset mic and a free program called Audacity. Will you be calling each other on the phone or making the call over some voice chat like G-talk or Skype? If you need help transcribing or doing a test run (talk with me and record yourself), I'd be happy to help.
Care if I highlight my questions that are my favorite? I posted that many to help get others' creative juices flowing. Mine aren't in any sort of preference order right now, rather in semi-album order.
