What's up my fellow people with great taste,
Just caught the New York and Philadelphia dates of the Tokyo Police Club headlining tour. This is obviously a different-natured show than I have become used to which came with new pros and cons.
Some cons were that there were SO many people that did not know of this band that there wasn't the normal synergy you would find in a SSLYBY headlining show. It also sucks that they play reaaally early. Not a lot of time to pre-party. There were a lot of little ones too, but I was one of those kids who loved concerts at a young age and I can handle that. If anything I was out of place for being in my mid-twenties. And obviously the worst con is that they were opening a double headliner show which means they only get a 30 minute set time (Things should be a little better for you kids that get the shows without 2 door cinema club). It's really all about the music and there just wasn't a lot of music.
Some pros were that they are playing big venues and the sound was loud and great. They looked and sounded like the rock stars we all believe they should be, despite their down to earth nature. Also it is great to know that a huuuge crowd of people that do not know them get to see the greatness that is that band. They deserve all the attention in the world. Of course I heard a lot of jokes about their name. It has been so long that I have forgotten the awkwardness that is their name. It really pissed me off that anyone one make cheap obvious jokes about a band that just rocked and impressed. And the most obvious pro is that I got to see 8 SSLYBY songs live. In the scheme of things, I would take that any day of the year.
Set list for both nights:
Back in the Saddle
Sink/Let It Sway
All Hail Dracula!
Modern Mystery
Everlyn
Think I Wanna Die
House Fire
Pangaea
To Quote Phil, it was a "greatest hits" set given the limited time. It sounds funny but he is right. Most of these have their own music video and have been deemed "singles". Very cool to see their catalog grow over the years. They are one cd away from being able to have a best of release that will be completely useless to us big fans.
I really was frustrated with 2 Door Cinema Club. They played twice as long and have half as much material as SSLYBY. Every song started sounding the same and they were realllly boring. Seriously cliche and generic stuff. I think I would of enjoyed them more if they played shorter and sslyby played longer.
Tokyo Police Club were really good and fun to watch. I like their latest release Champ. They sounded good and they were a worthy closer.
It would be cool to see what songs they add for the shows that 2 Door Cinema Club is not on. If someone can post that setlist (Zilcho) that would be sweet.
To conclude... Go to this show and GET THERE EARLY. Cheer hard for SSLYBY.
