With all the sslyby news that happened this past week, I dusted off my sslyby vinyl to spend some quality listening time with it. A lot of people I've spoken with are very sad to hear the news about John leaving. Although I know the band will continue being awesome, it will be so different for all of us since John was with sslyby from the beginning. I thought I'd put this thread up to celebrate all the great things John brought to the band. There are plenty of great concert experiences I have had, that it's hard to remember. I do know that whenever he sang I am Warm and Powerful live, it was amazing and puts the recorded version to shame. Here's a video circa 2006 at Alchemize in Cincinnati, OH: youtu.be/oI7XI0t9ZxQAlso, we've discussed the Let It Sway album before, but I'll say it again. Every time I hear the song Everlyn, it just makes my heart drop. Great vocals and a great, simple pop rhythm. I'm excited to see how Phil handles John's songs. I saw Phil sing a whole set many years ago because John lost his voice, but I barely remember it.

I'm going to miss John and Phil's duet on "Back in the Saddle." First time I heard it was at a show in Lawrence, KS. Gave me chills.
Excited we'll be able to see John Rob one last time in their documentary that's coming out this summer (?) about their trip to Russia.

I haven't even seen them live This is really what makes me sad. One of the reasons I really got into SSLYBY was the song "Some Constellation". For at least a year, that was the one song that inspired me to write this full-length screenplay. I haven't even really heard of them then - I think I just got the song off a random indie playlist. But once I discovered their discography there was really no turning back. That sounded a tad too dramatic, but you get it right? Haha

This is such an awesome version of Some Constellation
I hope he continues to make music.
Don't worry about being overly dramatic. I was talking to a friend about this and this band has been a big part of my life for the last 6 years (and some change), so it is a little traumatic. It's like having a girlfriend and then her arm gets cut off and it's replaced with another arm. Shes still really cool, but isn't quite the same. We'll see as time goes how the band keeps going.

I'm still shocked and very sad about John's departure.. The reason I got into this band was because of him essentially with the song "House Fire". Super bummed I didn't get to see him live either.. I had a chance to with my Kickstarter tickets; but it was just bad timing that year cos I live in the middle of nowhere basically. Had I know that it'd be the last chance to see him though I woulda jumped on it in a heartbeat.
But Phil is a major bamf. SSLYBY will be just fine, that's for sure. But I will miss John. Hope he comes back in time. Or continuous making awesome music at least.

So has there been any comment by John or anyone else in the band, as to why he decided to leave...?

So has there been any comment by John or anyone else in the band, as to why he decided to leave...? Yeah, John Rob is leaving (possibly already left) Springfield, MO. They discussed trying to work together from a distance but eventually realized it just was not the right solution for the band. He decided to step away from participating on Fly By Wire as part of this decision, but helped Phil in training his vocals.

I saw some pictures around Instagram posted by him and his girlfriend after their move to the Brooklyn area of New York. It looks like they're loving it. I'm really excited for them. NYC/Brooklyn seem like an amazing place to be living if you're a young 30-something and into music and things hipsterish.

John Rob came to the NYC show this past Monday and sang in the encore with the band.
