I missed the Chicago show because my car broke down on the way to it. My other friends in the area were unable to help but SSLYBY stepped up to the plate and really gave me a hand. Here's a pretty much copy/paste from my blog of the event. (Yay for crappy cartoon versions of the band):
On Wednesday night, my friends in Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin were playing in a show in Chicago. Part of their spring tour for the release of Pershing. It was the closest the band would be this tour and it's not too bad of a drive. I need to head down to Chicago anyways, additional job hunting and such. First I made a stop in Grand Rapids to try and get Greg, but he was overburdened with homework. So off I shot to Chicago alone. Well, doing great on time, I'm about to get to the toll for the Skyway. Then...
The transmission was no longer catching. Delightful. Turns out the transmission line died. Back to that later. So after I was towed (by the city) into the McDonald's parking lot right there, I called AAA to get a tow to a garage as I wasn't driving anywhere that night. Then sent out some text messages and calls. I got in contact with SSLYBY, a friend also in town, and a friend who lives in Chicago. A great way to spend the hour waiting for the tow. Turns out my friend in town was already drunk and my friend living in Chicago didn't respond. SSLYBY asked to be kept posted. Another half hour with the drive tow to the garage and I learned from him that apparently AAA was wrong about nearby hotels. dang. So waiting at the car, I sent out more messages. SSLYBY stepped up.
Phil said they'd help me cover the cab and let me stay with them for the night if I made it to the show. Well, I called a couple cab agencies. I had four numbers. 1 - disconnected. 1 - wrong number. 2 - that worked to the extent I could ask for a cab. So the first of those two went something like this:
0:00 Call, told I'll get a call back in a few minutes with someone on the job.
0:20 Get a call, someone is on the job.
1:10 I call back, they have no idea where this guy is.
1:25 They call back, no idea where cabbie is, no one else is available so I said I'd try elsewhere.
1:30 Next cab place says they'll call with someone on the job.
2:20 I call back. "What the hell?" Turns out they took my number down wrong. And tried calling earlier... to tell me no one was available. No one was available at the moment either. They'll call me again soon.
2:30 Still no one at this either. At this point I told 'em cancel the call, I'd gotten help.
Just before that last call, I texted SSLYBY about my wait and thus my absence and Phil said he could pick me up now that the show was over. Awesome! Oh, and remember my friend living in Chicago I called ealier? Just before Phil got there, she called me back. A GREAT help.
Yea, that's about right. A quick special thanks to SSLYBY's friend Pete who gave them a place to stay for the night and hopefully didn't mind my addition to the group. The next morning, with my cellphone nearly dead from the previous night's activity, I called the garage. Transmission line was shot, the transmission fluid needed to be replaced, and what the hell, let's get that oil change. $350. GREAT! The good news was that it would be done by early afternoon so the band could drop me off at the car on their way out of the city. So we went and had lunch at this really good Mexican restaurant. The fun part was the Spanish MTV they had on:
I forgot to label him, but that's my crappy cartoon version of John from the band. But yea, after lunch, they dropped me off at my car and I headed back to Grand Rapids, where tired and after driving for two days, I opted NOT to try drawing a whole comic for Friday. So that's it. Thanks again to SSLYBY for the help!
