Okay, I'm not sure if this should go in this forum or in Yr Music/Art but I figured this is the one thats somewhat active.
Anyway, which SSLYBY song should my band cover for next years Battle of the Bands? We're all subpar musicians and terrible singers but we have a good year to practice for our set (3 songs in the prelim round, 2 more if we move on, and 1 more if we are the winners). We're all incoming juniors so even though we have a year to practice/write 6 songs it really isn't a whole lot of time since we have a lot of other obligations to fulfill (SAT's, AP classes, volunteering, working for new equipment).
I'd like hear people's input on what songs and why (catchiness/"rock-able"/etc....). The 'Broom' songs are already tabbed (fairly well too!) so that ='s less time tabbing out stuff and more time jamming! Our band consist of a drummer, bassist, keyboardist, two guitarist (alternating lead vocals/rhythm guitar and lead guitar/backing vocals). I play with a Telecaster through a Fender amp and the other guitarist plays a strat through a fender so our set up is very akin to SSLYBY's setup.
I personally would like to do either Gwyneth or I Am Warm and Powerful. Both have lots of nice lush piano melodies and are easy to play. Gwyneth has a bad ass instrumental section at about the 1:45 point, and I Am Warm and Powerful has a cool tempo shift at about 1:13).

i'm not exactly the most music savvy person, but as a general audience member at concerts, i chose I am Warm and Powerful. It's moreso a mellow song, but the tempo shift is powerful enough to hook the audience. My opinion may also be a little biast since I prefer I am Warm and Powerful over Gwyneth.
On a completely different note, I don't know how Battle of the Bands works, never went to one. If the judges are judging you, definitely stick to I am Warm and Powerful, but if it's the audience, possibly consider Pangea. Upbeat, catchy, clever songs really get a crowd into your stuff. When Boris opened at a show not many people knew them at, the song got people off their seats and on their feet in no time.

pangea seems like it would be a crowd pleaser. I've sent that song to a bunch of my friends (who are also in high school) and they like it because they know about the continent and whatnot.

I said "I am Warm and Powerful" however, I had a thought - Being a high school battle of the bands, I don't know how much they want to censor lyrics. I know some schools won't allow any kind of reference to drugs/alcohol. So the line in W&P "When we get out we get drunk/ and get high and don't talk". Again, it's only one line and I don't know how strict the rules are for the contest (there may be other lyrical limitations), but keep it in mind.

Haha, I'd probably just hum those words if we do I Am Warm and Powerful. It's a real hard one to sing though, so I'm having second thoughts.
