It’s not about the members of this forum distributing leaked copies, and neither am I suggesting that discussing it would resulting in “thousand of people” not buying the album. I’ve said that it’s too late to stop the momentum, as demonstrated by the amount of people who already posted about Pershing on SSLYBY’s myspace. Even if you don’t believe that talking about it will contribute even minimally to the number of people downloading the album, there’s also the principle of the matter. It really sucks that the album was leaked, so while it’s awesome that we get to enjoy it for a month before its actual release, I’m not exactly shouting about it from the rooftops. I didn’t even tell my closest friends about the leak. I’ll wait until after they buy a copy, and hope they don’t try to kill me for holding out.
As for my condescending comment, I guess I wanted you to know that although everyone who posted has contributed to the tone of this argument, I felt like you’re “thanks for the condescension” comment jumped the gun. yourmother only stated that true fans should try to keep this quiet, not that we weren’t true fans for downloading it. This comment implied that true fans would buy the album also, which was a fair assumption. She also stated if you weren’t a fan, you should just buy the album.
Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with being an artist’s advocate! I would consider myself one too, although mostly just for SSLYBY.

My posts about "true fans" and last post "music doesn't just happen" were not directed at you in the least but you are insisting on taking them so personally. The former post was clearly directed at me in some part, since you posted it in response to me and loveless talking about the album. I stated quite clearly at the beginning of my last post that I understood it was not directed at me. Furthermore, this is the Internet; there is no point in taking anything here personally, so I don't. When I see comments like yours that make statements about something I said or did, I respond to them. Simple. Do you really understand what they go through? Did you see them on tour when they were driving around the north east, in the dead of winter on treadless tires. On the last tour through, I personally gave them a crap set of jumper cables with a missing rubber handle that if they used them incorrectly they would have electrocuted themselves. This is more than hard work. This is risking your life for your art and fans. You would be surprised if you knew the cut they actually get after they pay their bills. It is difficult to know how much money a group loses exactly with illegal downloads but I am betting it is enough to make the changes needed to travel safely without hardship. I don't think we are on opposite sides on this. Sadly, I did not catch their northeast tour. The only time I've gotten to see them since leaving Springfield was at House of Blues in San Diego when they opened for Mute Math. They had to leave early, because fellow openers the Cinematics' tour van had broken down so SSLYBY gave them a ride to LA that night so they could be on a talk show. I would most definitely not be surprised by the cut they get after paying their bills, because I understand how the music industry works and how difficult it is to make a living at it. We're almost certainly not on opposite sides of the issue, but judging by the way you preach to the choir and use such loaded language, we might as well be. P.S. Sanctimonious means hypocritically pious or devout. I personally have never downloaded anything illegally. I don't even know how. If I didn't know what sanctimonious means, I wouldn't have used the word. I wasn't accusing you of downloading the album. If yourmother had said all of that as nicely as you did, I'd have no reason to call the post condescending. I suppose I'm just less willing than anyone else here to give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to extremely poor word choice and obvious slights. And I still find it hard to believe that I'm being told to keep my adoration of Pershing under wraps. I must admit I don't get that last part at all--why would anyone who's not a fan buy the album (or download it, for that matter)?

Regarding the last part, isn't that how fans are formed? They hear about the band through word of mouth, listen to the few songs on their myspace, and if they like the music they will buy the CD. I know that's how I became a fan of SSLYBY.
I'm not going to lie: I download music. And I have a backlog of about 20 CDs that I've promised myself to buy, since I would consider myself a fan, but probably won't get a chance to because I don't have the money or the time. I hate that Pershing will become an album like that for a lot of people.

The worst part about the leak is that it was leaked far sooner than I think anyone was expecting. So, people that would have bought it outright have downloaded it. If they don't get around to buying, well then SSLYBY is SOL.
P.S. Chelsea, you are grounded not only for downloading, but admitting it in a public forum.
Love, Your Mother

Hi. I downloaded the leak. Then I pre-ordered it on Amazon. Then, starting yesterday, Polyvinyl has it available to preorder, and you get a bunch of extra stuff with it. So I canceled my Amazon pre-order and re-pre-ordered it from Polyvinyl. So let's stop bickering about who's a fan and whatnot and lets all go preorder that mofo.

This leak stuff...........this is how the industry works now. It's weird but I really think fighting it is the worst thing a band or label could do. I think this is how it is now. I think labels are just going to have to get creative when coming up with ways to get people to buy albums........and I think that bands really need to embrace the downloading thing because that's how people people find out about them. It's almost a marketing tool in itself now. I've heard this album that someone uploaded on a forum so now I know about this band. What is it about this album or band that's going to make me go see their show or buy their album? What will make me want to support them? These days, the leak actually has to be factored into the marketing plan.
Genius: dropping the video made by the band (along with Glue Girls) on several big blogs. That's the kind of stuff bands and labels need to be thinking about today in terms of creative marketing.
The new album is awesome. I'm especially digging Modern Mystery and Oceanographer at the moment. I'm not sure I like the echo-y vocals on You Could Write A Book but overall, it's a nice recording. I was especially happy with the way Dead Right was recorded; with the drums coming in after a few verses.
I was a bit afraid that the whole thing would sound like Oceanographer and sound more like the rock-ish live shows and less like Broom.......but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there's a really good mix of both on the album. I think it properly showcases how versatile this band really is and more importantly, how much they're grown since last album.
I will be driving to two of the upcoming tour dates in April and I fully intend to shove money into the hands on the band themselves rather than order the album online.

I will be driving to two of the upcoming tour dates in April and I fully intend to shove money into the hands on the band themselves rather than order the album online. I agree with everything you said, but to be fair, ordering the album through the label does help SSLYBY in the long run. If Polyvinyl sees that Pershing is selling well, they'll put more effort into tour support, promotion for singles, and putting Yeltsin on late night talk shows (I can dream). Personally, I'd rather be able to eat dinner tonight than know that album sales I don't see might someday contribute to my house in the south of France, but there's still that balance to consider. I encourage everyone to download it if you can't wait, buy it when it comes out, and catch every show within 300 miles and buy a ton of merch, just so all the bases are covered.

That's actually just a reflection of my own laziness; I never buy anything on the internet and very rarely in stores. I actually like that you get extras for pre-ordering, though. Incentive is nice.

I'm just guessing here but... Definitely Maybe On The Album: Bigger Than Yr Yard Modern Mystery Lower The Gas Prices, Howard Johnson Deadright There's A Chance: April 10 Glue Girls Boring Fountain Kittens With Casts It's Not Worth Fighting The Oceanographer Rachel Lara Honey Baby You Could Write A Book (this was on the Gwyn & Grace EP, but they seem to play it a lot still) Maybe something else from EPs already released. I'm sure there will be some brand new songs that haven't been recorded at all. Looking back on this, I think I did pretty well.

April 10 is some old demo. Kittens With Casts is a live song from the website. Honey Baby is a song they played on a radio station. They say on the recording that it's going to be on the next album, but the song is probably from 2005, so yeah. They also talk about "Beer Can" by Beck.
I have a whole load of old songs, but the person I got them from said that I couldn't share them. Sorry.
